Understanding Counselling

What is counselling?

Counselling is the process of exploring and making sense of your concerns within a safe, secure and confidential environment provided by a qualified professional counsellor.

How does it work?

It provides you with a regular space and time just for you where you can talk about your worries and understand your experiences. Moreover, you will be able to connect with your feelings and find your true self. Certainly, engaging in therapy can be hugely transformative and restorative.

When might you need counselling?

The need for counselling might arise when you start finding difficult to understand your experiences, thoughts, emotions and behaviours.

In what circumstances…

You might start feeling that life changes are becoming too overwhelming to manage or that things are getting on top of you in various areas of your life. Maybe, you just want to look into a particular issue that keeps recurring. In addition, you might want to work on self-exploration in search of the meaning for identity and purpose in life.

As your counsellor…

I can help you to make sense of what you are bringing into the counselling sessions, as well as to hold any feelings, thoughts or needs that you might experience through this process without judgement, prejudice or criticism.

How do I work?

I work in a non-directive manner. This means that you will be able to decide what you want to bring into the sessions and manage how and when you want to explore your concerns. And whilst we are building a working relationship based on trust and openness, we will be able to unpack and reflect on what is going on for you. Tentatively and with care, I will challenge your understanding of yourself and your world and help you to look into the future under a much healthier and positive lens.

How can I help you?

By creating an environment where you can feel empowered to make decisions and choices that work for you, to be able to use the sessions as ‘a rehearsal stage’ where to explore real-life experiences, to consider how new changes might help you to improve your current circumstances and to allow the counselling work to be the catalyst to foment personal growth.

The Counselling sessions

Counselling is a process that it is unique and personal to you. For this reason, to make therapy most effective it is recommended that the sessions are held weekly, usually on the same day and time.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

The length of therapy will be dependent on the nature of your concerns, your commitment to the sessions and your engagement to the process. You are welcome to ask any questions at any time during therapy.

It feels a bit daunting…

Embarking on the journey of counselling might feel a bit ‘bumpy’ at times. However, it is during the process of manoeuvring these difficult moments when the movement towards healing and wellbeing begins. On the other hand, you won’t be on your own. I will be beside you supporting you during this process.

How do I know that the sessions are helping me?

At different times of the therapy, we will be reviewing if counselling is helping to meet your goals and whether new objectives need to be set or adjusted.

EQUALITY

I provide equality of service and care to everyone, regardless of their age, disability, gender, gender identity, race, religion or belief or sexual orientation
